triumph and disappointment

we're half way there... last training that i attended, we did a 7 mile run. this saturday, they ran 8...

i just came home from running. happy. NO LEG PAIN!! woohoo! i thought i would run around my usual route twice and that would yield me a good at least 7 miles. as i was ending my second run, i was surprised at myself to be done by 45 minutes. as i got home, stretched, mapped my run... i only did a measely 3.5 miles... :(

View Start: 1205 End: 1250 in a larger map

yeah... i should go out and run again, right? maybe... i promise to do it tomorrow. for now, i'm glad to know that i could do this. i actually was scared to run earlier. as the hubby said "you will never know unless you go." thanks hubby for the support, words of encouragement and prayers.

tomorrow, i promise to do better. for now, thank you Lord for not letting me feel the pain today. :)

God bless you all!

Halfway There...

I know I have been bad in keeping up with this blog... so much things in my plate lately..

so as a recap, earlier on of the month, as mentioned before, amabella and i have done a bake sale. and it was quite successful. we gathered close to $200 each of us. thank God for all the people who supported us despite the lack of "advertisement" and being in a inconspicuous location.

before the bake sale, i was sick in bed... got hit with the cold. the bake sale happened just as i was about to get better - talk about perfect timing. and work had kicked my behind following days after the bake sale.

although i haven't been on a proper training those weeks, but i have been going to the gym. although my running has been mediocre - 20 minute, 30 minute run with a couple seated leg work out.

last saturday (october 16), despite my sheer exhaustion and lack of sleep i was able to attend the training with the team at central park - a first since the shin splint thing happened. thank God for a running partner (ama) for pushing me and making me feel bad for not going (she didn't have to say anything)... we both did a 6.7 mile course. we ended about an hour and forty-five minutes. the entire time not a single mild pain shot up my lower leg. it was such a nice day in central park, and it was such a nice feeling not to feel any pain the entire course. but, as expected, my legs were heavy as lead after the training. it felt good being able to know that i could do it, and that having people around you cheer for you eventhough you were the last one of the group to finish.

sunday (october 17) was the making strides for breast cancer. although it was kind of a last minute, the hubby, my brother and his wife joined sara's team to walk five miles for breast cancer. sara's sister, flor, was diagnosed early on, trumped breast cancer and was defeated by it in around march of this year. it was such an impact to us, to realize that no matter what stage cancer is caught, you still never know the outcome. although this was my second time to this walk, it felt different to actually know someone who battled this awful disease. it's also different from taking care of patients who had cancer and either trumped it or was defeated to actually knowing someone and her family. seeing that person in the hospital bed, seeing how she hurts and seeing her family and love ones go through each suffering for her and with her. just as sara's prayer - i pray that may the girls never go through this suffering. may they find cure so we may be able to celebrate more birthdays with the people we love.

with every triumph, i believe, is a disappointment. today, i planned to jog/walk/run around the neighborhood for about two hours. i did my warm ups and stretches. i layered myself with clothing, i brought my gatorade with me. not five minutes into running... pain just shot through both my legs, more so on my right leg. it was horrendous. i tried to walk it off, do a little bit more stretching - nothing. the pain persisted. went to the gym, tried the treadmill - i felt like i need to use crutches to get off my feet. i went home so defeated.

i just thank God for a loving, suporting husband who was home and consoled me. i ate my frustrations away. i know this is just another hurdle towards the finish line. since i would be working the next two days, i plan to try again on friday.

thank you all for your support and donations. i really am trying my best to train hard and get to the finish line with no injuries.

God bless!!

back from my hiatusq

yes, I'm back on my sneakers. after a week and a half of recuperating from a nasty cold and sore throat... few days of being overworked.... I was back on on the treadmill.

I can't believe how out of shape I am, yet it felt good to be running again. I was able to run five minute straight but the second one was tough. I still encountered some shin splints, yet, it seem to go away when I walk I off. I don't know of that's a good sign or if it's something that I shouldn't do.... but I don't care. all I want rght now is to be back on track and push myself as far as I could to finish that 13.1 mile marathon.

recommitment is few days from now... just finished filling out my forms. I both feel anxiety and excitement. excitement to be able to do a half marathon - something I never thought I would do. anxiety because I still have a long way to go both for the run and the fundraiser.

I am happy though, for I have reached over $1,000.00!!! thanks to Nancy and Ann marie for seeing me through that hump! I still have about $2,675.00 to go.... so keep those donations coming in! remember, every dollar counts!!!

well, I'm off to bed for now... will keep you posted some more!

btw, I will be making strides for breast cancer this Sunday. I am doin this in memory of flora torres, horacio's cousin who we have lost in the battle of breast cancer earlier this year. I will be posting up information soon.

God bless!! :)

Bake Sale

so, ama and i decided to do a (last minute) bake sale. we talked about it in passing, thought of a date... two days before, we set it up and commenced baking.

considering that it wasn't a "well advertised" and we were in a discreet location... we did well.

thanks to all those who supported us!!! :) we really appreciate it!! to my hubby: thanks for carrying trays and trays of goodies, driving us and spreading the word for us.

thinking of another one.. maybe this time, it won't be as conspicuous as it was. :)

thanks again!!

God bless!

ps: pictures to be uploaded.. soon! :)

now, i'm sleepy... work for the next two days. until then.

* i still experience the shin splints on my right, and i think my left leg is starting to act up. but i am too out of shape already, and i am pushing myself and will be pushing myself.

A Week Off

after a week of hiatus - ok, of being a bum, stayed at home and read a book (if not at work), i am back. i am back and frustrated.

i thought rest was all the shin splints needed... good thing, i decided to join a gym. yes, I JOINED A GYM! i had a feeling the shin splints were gonna start again, and i just didn't want to stop and walk home defeated. joining a gym was a good idea.

i started of in the treadmill... and yes, same situation - shin splint started few minutes into running. i tried the elliptical machine... but i think i had been in "bedrest" for far too long that my body couldn't last. i was so out of shape! so i tried the bicycle... and i got bored - it did nothing to me. so, i got the hubby to show me to do some weights for my legs. and he did... i did about 30 reps on the leg bench press thingy (in three different weights). and it felt good.

i wonder, how come the shin splints goes away when i'm not running... but comes back as soon as i start again? is this normal?

shin splints or not, i plan to stick to the gym on the days that the weather won't permit me to run. i even plan to visit it after work, just do some stuff (i don't know what in particular).

God bless!

hello shin splints, we meet again...

after two days of rest, i decided to run again. this time, i made sure i did the stretches that the coach taught me and some more.

View Start: 1849 End: 1907 in a larger map

i pushed myself to run even with the pain. then i walked it off. as soon as the pain subsided, i tried running again only to find myself in pain (again!). though i wanted to continue and do the course that i planned for the night, i realized that i didn't have my cellphone nor any form of identification with me... that thought scared me, thinking what if i can't go home or it gets to a point wherein i just can't move due to pain... so i decided to just walk back home.

currently icing the lower part of my leg.. will try again in the morning. :(

God bless!

Shout Outs!

oh! i just want to take this opportunity to thank those people who recently donated:

Regina, Tita Sylvia, Maria, Marichu and my sister - Johanna!

Thank you so much for your support!! I really appreciate it! :)

First Injury: Shin Splints

Got up at 6:30am to attend the group training at central park. the goal today was five miles....

first mile in, my right ankle started to feel funny. i tried to rotate/stretch as much as i can. tried to push myself to run some more, only to find the pain to slowly crawl up to my shins. it was terrifying. i haven't had that pain since i have gotten my shoes (which was also since the start of the training). i took the advice of one of the runners and turned back and walked to "home base". walking down, the pain slowly dissipated. i tried to run again, then my left started to act. so i stopped. i just tried to run to see how my foot would hold up... it was really disappointing... i really wanted to finish the course...

when i got back to the "home base" one of the mentors and trainer, helped me out with some stretches. which helped... and i hope would help me out even more as i continue.

it's not hurting right now, but it is tender when i massage it. i don't know if it is my shoes or just the terrain... it might be my legs telling me to get that nike shoes so i could get that nike + ipod thing! hehe

well.. i hope to be running either tomorrow or monday (after jury duty). still debating whether to take a rest day tomorrow or not... i'll keep you posted!

God bless!

I'm Back!

after six days of no run (four of which were due to work), i got up early (more like - forced myself!) despite of a sleepless night.

pre-running fuel: two hard boiled eggs and a glass of soy milk.

it felt good to run again, but it was hard especially after not running for six days. my legs felt weird at the beginning (like they were stiff or something) or maybe i just need to warm up more than what i do. ran around the neighborhood and continued (and ended) in the playground.

saw a lot of runners today. guess the weather is just so beautiful - sunny with cool breeze.

here's the route that i took:

(please pardon me... i am exhausted at the moment. having just come home and i think the sleep deprivation is finally catching up on me!)

until next time! God bless you all! have a lovely day!

missed group training

was not able to join the group training today, got home after 6pm.

i was feeling bad not being able to go. instead I changed into my "running gear" and went to the playground. I only did half an hour though, since I was starting to feel weird about the group of people that was hanging around the park. thankfully my hubby came with me, so I somehow felt safe.

got work for the next three days, but I will try to run again Friday after work. hopefully it won't be too bad at work and i would be able to get out at a decent time.

btw, team challenge is gonna be on the morning show tomorrow. so, whoever gets a chance to see it.... :) unfortunately i won't be there, but my friend will be! :)

Today...

...was supposed to do OT (meaning rest day), but got a call that they "don't need me". So, I ran... only for 45 minutes though, but was better than I did yesterday, I didn't feel like crawling back home after the first few minutes nor the last minutes. :)

Here's the route....

Worst Run Ever!!

Well, so far - at least! I am not gonna even try map it out (in google map). It such a beautiful day, although I still am feeling under the weather, I forced myself to run. I thought I could do at least an hour (again). Lesson learned: if you're still recuperating and your body is telling you otherwise, listen to your body.

I ran a measly ten minutes (maybe not even) and walked my way back home. Even the walk back home felt like torture! I wanted to crawl, hail a cab... Even with a water bottle on hand (I thought I would just need to hydrate more), I couldn't. Yet, even with such a poor performance, I am sweating like I just ran the full half marathon!

I am gonna end this post, sad and hit the shower... hopefully I would feel much better in the next couple. I have to feel better. I have to do better.

Back To The Outside World

After trying to get rid of the bug that I caught... I woke up this morning feeling a bit well. The funny feeling in my throat is still there, but not so much. So, I decided to run. My goal for today was to at least do an hour. I know we are supposed to do it by miles, but since I still do not own a pedometer (or something that could measure my mileage) - I think that would do. While running a thought came to me... "map out through google map my run and post it!"

So, after almost 45 minutes of trying to fugure it out and trying to recall my route (yes, I have a very bad sense of direction and memory when it comes to streets and roads!). Here it is:

View August 27, 2010 Run in a larger map

Where it says beginning of the end (which was at a playground) - I went around the track in the playground for about half an hour running/walking. So, I think I did just about 3 miles today. I say, not bad after being sick! :)

I Can Run!

After the first day of the group training, I felt good. Although I was not able to run for the next two days due to work - which I considered as my rest days.

We left for Connecticut on Friday night to spend the weekend with family (in celebration of my cousin's husband's birthday). We got there late, and did not sleep until 2:30am. Still, I was determined to run during that weekend.

I woke up at 7am, Saturday morning, got my gear ready and my breakfast - bagel with peanut butter. It was a tough decision, my mom's place is located just by a very steep hill. So mu brother had suggested a route with a flat trail. So off we went, running five minutes and resting for one. It was a such a good run. I was able to run five minutes at a time without the need to stop after the first set. Coming back to my mom's place, I challenged myself to run the steep hill - and I conquered it! It was terrible, and as soon as I reached the top, I wanted to collapse! The great part about is - we ran back down and it was heaven! (hahaha)

Sunday morning - greeted us with non-stop rain. I was going to brave it and run. But thought otherwise. The rain was just relentless. We drove back down to NY late in the afternoon with the steady downpour.

Monday - woke up with sniffles and funny throat feeling, and yes, it was still raining. The rain was not as bad as it was the other day. So, I thought it would be ok for me to run. So, I got ready and ran. It was terrible! I could not run for a good 10 minutes - but I tried. I guess this was what they meant "you'll have good runs and bad ones."

Today, I woke up feeling a bit worse than yesterday. But still motivated to run. Still with the gloomy weather yet, no rain. I planned to run my usual route, only to be welcomed by construction for the entire block by the park. So, plan b: run around the park. The park had a track, I just do not know how many miles the track is (I think it's about half a mile per lap). I was able to run the first six-minutes and rest for one minute. The second six-minute I could not finish, despite me pushing myself really hard. I did about three minute. (sad face) But I did not give up. I walked around the track and ran as much as my legs could carry me. It felt nice to run. It felt nice that I was pushing myself despite me feeling under the weather.

I just hope that this sniffles would go away and that I could run longer. I am determined.

Taking A New Challenge

I start this blog to chronicle the new challenge that I have taken upon.

I joined and will be running a 13.1 mile marathon on December 5, 2010.

Yes, I will be running. For those who know me well, knows that me and the gym does not go on the same sentence. At first, it was more for a personal benefit - cardio, tone my body, get more active. Then I went to the meeting to register, and I was just inspired. By the way, I am running with Team Challenge to help raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. The "speaker" told us about the runners who participate have Crohn's or ulcerative disease and they run half marathon after half marathon. I looked at myself - here I am healthy as I could be, yet I have done nothing. Sure, I am a nurse and I help people each day... but for some reason, having that as a job does not really count. I get paid to help them. It is my job.

So, thankful that I got talked into attending the meeting (I also got a friend to join), I signed up right then and there.

Here I am now, few hours after my first two mile run (actually it was just 1.8 mile according to our team coach). It was a challenge. But I finished it without throwing up, fainting or sitting down to take a breather! I also finished it under 30 minutes - which at first I thought would be impossible. But yes, I am proud of myself to have finished it and am looking forward to build up my endurance and run more miles. Each mile I run, I dedicate to the cause.

Have I mentioned that this was a fundraiser? Yep, it is. Your donation to the cause will be greatly appreciated, and remember, this is a tax deductable donation! If you wish to donate simply visit: www.active.com/donate/lv10nyc/LVJOng. Eighty cents of each dollar you donate goes directly to Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America to find cure and improve the quality of life of children and adults suffering this disease. Approximately 1.4 million American children and adults are diagnosed with crohn's and ulcerative colitis, and more are suffering in silence.

I just want to thank you in advance for your support!

God bless!
